2-(4-vinylphenyl)pyridine (A), 3-(4-vinylphenyl)pyridine (B) and 4-(4-vinylphenyl)pyridine (C) that have amphiphilic property, which were synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction have been polymerized with (diphenylmethyl)potassium (Ph2CHK) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by anionic polymerization. The polymerization of A and C proceeded quantitatively at ?78 °C for 150 min and 900 min, but that of B carried out quantitatively at 0 °C for 360 min. The well-defined poly(A) and poly(C) with predictable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.04?1.10) was obtained, and poly(B) possesses predictable molecular weights and slightly broad molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.13?1.18). The block copolymerization of A and C with 2-vinylpyridine and methyl methacrylate was performed to estimate the reactivity of homopolymer and to find its living nature. The resulting block copolymers of poly(A)-b-PMMA showed micro-phase separation in THF as observed from TEM. It was finally confirmed that the morphologies of poly(A)-b-PMMA were changed depending on block ratios of block copolymers.
