It is generally accepted that the dilute acid saccharification of any biomass would produce much undesired byproducts such as 5-HMF and organic acids that act as fermentation inhibitors. To overcome this drawback, much effort has been devoted to enzymatic saccharification which affords sugar only products other than inhibitors. However the production efficacy should not also be neglected when it comes to the mass hydrolyzate aimed for bioethanol production as an alternative transport fuels since the plant cell wall’s resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis for accessing sugars to make fuel is a problem that spans several orders of magnitude. Therefore, it is very significant to find out a process of dilute acid hydrolysis using a substrate that is easy-to-hydrolyze to allow as low byproduct concentration as possible. In this respect, seaweeds (macro algae) have enormous potential as an appropriate biomass for producing bioethanol. Herein we report a practical approach on the dilute acid continuous hydrolysis of Gelidium amansii to produce high quality of hydrolyzate and their fermentability to generate bioethanol.
