Control of morphology on metal nanocrystals attracts much attention in recent years due to the precise tuning of physical properties such as electronic, optical, and catalytic features of the materials through their unique structure-property relations. The size and shape of gold and silver nanocrystals exclusively determine the surface plasmon extinction bands, resulting in an intense UV scattering and an enhancement of local electromagnetic fields. Various metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are generally used as active components for heterogeneous catalytic reactions, and the combination between active particles and supports can maximize catalytic performances. Therefore, exquisite control of metal nanostructures with high uniformity is a critical prerequisite for various applications. Since 2005, we have focused on the synthesis, morphology control, and surface functionalization of metal nanoparticles and their applications. We have successfully synthesized various polyhedral gold nanocrystals via a modified polyol process, and characterized optical properties based on surface plasmon resonance, which are essential for molecular sensing in a single particle level. Another research direction is nanocatalyst design with metal/metal oxide bifunctional structures, leading to rational approach towards high catalytic performance (activity, selectivity, stability and so on). Starting from these results, we are now planning to expand our research directions into single particle reaction monitoring, photoactive nanocatalysts for alternative energy generation, and electroactive materials for storage and transport.
