Acrylic acid (AA) based hydrogel is a suitable material for pH-responsive system such as drug delivery. However, pure acrylic acid hydrogel has weak mechanical property, improved stability and mechanical strength is required for practical applications. Recent works had demonstrated the possibility of biomedical applications of graphene oxide (GO)-based fabrications. In this study, graphene oxide was added into acrylic acid hydrogel for increasing their mechanical properties. GO/AA hybrid hydrogel was prepared by simple one-step γ-ray irradiation method. Thus, there was no necessity to add any initiators or crosslinkers, and it doesn’t require further purification. GO was synthesized by chemical procedure by modified Hummers’ method. The mechanical behavior was studied as a function of concentration of GO. This hybrid system has increased modulus value than that of original hydrogel which doesn’t contain GO. In addition, swelling property was investigated. This hydrogel shows swelling behavior in basic pH medium and was contracted in acidic pH medium, reversibly.
