Shale oil is a complex mixture of organic compounds similar in many ways to natural petroleum. In this research, shale oils generated from source rocks collected in different zones of the Eocene Green River Formation using three different pyrolysis methods. The prepared samples with and without the added internal standards compounds were analyzed by use of the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT ICR-MS) combined with atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI). In the spectra obtained by APPI FT-ICR MS analysis, N1 and N2 class compounds were the most dominant. Relative abundance ratios obtained by dividing abundance of peaks with the abundance of internal standards were used to compare chemical compositions. As a results, it was observed that ISS and AMSO combination produced the lightest and the FA and APM combination produced the heaviest oils. Overall, this study shows that the composition of shale oil depends not only on the difference pyrolysis methods as shown in our preliminary study, but also on the oil shale source rock. Thus, analysis of shale oils by high resolution mass spectrometry is necessary for obtaining information of chemical composition as well as chemical classes abundance, and for understanding about affinity between shale oil and petroleum.
