In this study, two schiff bases of melamine were synthesized by condensation reaction of melamine with pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde and salicylaldehyde namely N,N’,N’’-tris[(1H-pyrrole)methylene]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine (1H-PMTT) (1) and N,N’,N’’-tris[(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylene]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine (2-HPMTT) (2), respectively. The binding abilities, colorimetric properties and stoichiometry of these compounds towards various acids (amino acids, organic acids) examined by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. Upon addition of a series of organic and amino acids to 1 and 2 in DMF, the appearance of the solution of receptor 2 with tryptophan showed color changes from colorless to yellow, which that can be detected by naked eye. However, the addition of the other acids to 1 and 2 did not induce any color change. Thus, receptor 2 can act as optical chemical sensor for recognition of tryptophan. Also, solution of receptor 2 with tryptophan emission intensity are increased due to intra-molecular charge transfer (ICT) in the excited state of the receptor while the other organic, amino acids showed little or no interaction.
