Due to the contraction of the ozone layer during the past decades there has been a profound increase in UV radiation dosage, including both blacklight (UVA) and dangerous (UVB) radiation. A relatively small increase in UV radiation has a substantial impact on human skin and eyes, the biosphere, and the production of ground-level ozone. Therefore, there is a need to develop alternative bulk transparent UV-shielding materials suitable for applications such as UV-shielding windows, contact lenses, or glasses, etc. Here, we propose TiO2@SiO2 and ZnO@SiO2 core/shell nanomaterials as effective UV shielding agent. In the typical synthesis, SiO2 was coated over different types of TiO2 (anatase and rutile) and ZnO by sol-gel waiting method. The synthesized TiO2@SiO2 and ZnO@SiO2 particles were characterized by UV-Vis, XRD, SEM and TEM. The UV-Vis transmittance spectra showed that blocking of UV region while more than 90% transmittance in the visible region for all the samples used in this. XRD and SAED studies confirmed the formation of amorphous SiO2 coated over the TiO2 and ZnO particles. The coating of SiO2 over the surface of anatase, rutile TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles resulted in the increase in particle size. About, 20-30 nm thin shell of SiO2, on the surface of TiO2 and ZnO particles were observed. In order to study the UV light shielding capabaility of the samples, photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue on TiO2@SiO2, ZnO@SiO2 was performed. Results showed that, photocatalytic activity for both types of TiO2 nanoparticles was partially suppressed. Rutile TiO2 coated SiO2 showed less photocatalytic activity than anatase TiO2 coated by SiO2. In comparison, the photocatalytic activity of ZnO almost vanished after SiO2 coating.
