X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a nascent technique that permits the investigation of photoinduced processes on a variety of systems. Especially ultrafast X-ray absorption spectroscopy allows for a better understanding of the possible mechanisms of chemical reactions. Using this technique, we performed the first time-resolved soft X-ray measurements of solvated FeII complexes. The FeII complexes have been extremely studied in relation to the spin crossover (SCO) phenomenon, where a transition from a low-spin ground state to a high-spin excited state occurs. We observe changes in ligand-field splitting, spin-state and orbital populations, and electron delocalization in the studied FeII SCO complex by probing photo-initiated transient absorption changes of the iron L2,3-edges. L-edge spectroscopy directly reveals dynamic changes in ligand field splitting and orbital covalency of 3d-orbitals as well as the charge flow between the metal ion and its surrounding ligands and the role of π-backbonding in the ligand cage. This study demonstrates the unique potential of ultrafast soft x-ray spectroscopy in solutions.
