Developments of new class of cost-effective, high-performance electrocatalysts that can potentially replace expensive Pt have become of prime significance in energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and solar cells. In this talk, two examples of new carbon-based electrocatalysts will be presented. High surface area ordered mesoporous carbon nitrides (OMCN) with hexagonal mesostructure were synthesized, and used as fuel cell cathode catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The OMCN show promising catalytic activity for ORR, and exhibit enhanced durability and methanol tolerance compared to carbon supported Pt catalyst. Nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon-carbon nanotube (OMC-CMT) composites were synthesized by using Ni-phthalocyanine as a precursor, and utilized as the counter electrode (CE) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The DSSC employing the OMC-CNT composites as the CE show a conversion efficiency that can rival the DSSC based on a Pt CE.
