The identity of the reactive oxidant produced by the Fenton reaction has long been a subject of controversy. Many groups of investigators have been providing conflicting evidences between hydroxyl radical and ferryl ion as the major oxidant produced by the Fenton reaction. Meanwhile, several recent studies have suggested that the nature of the reactive oxidant from the Fenton reaction may change depending on the solution pH even in the same system. They observed that the oxidant formed from the Fenton reaction at acidic pH is more reactive than that at neutral pH, suggesting that hydroxyl radical and ferryl ion are responsible for acidic and neutral pH conditions, respectively. In this study, the reactivity of the oxidants produced during the iron and copper-catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was evaluated using various probe compounds in the pH range of 3?11, and the pH-dependent nature of the reactive oxidants was discussed.
