Electrodeposition of ruthenium precursor was performed on gold substrate electrode by cyclic voltammetry either in the presence or absence of a nonionic surfactant. Porous three-dimensional ruthenium oxide nanostructure (RuO-NS) was obtained with surfactant. The surface morphology was characterized by SEM, HR-TEM and Raman spectroscopy. Surface area (RSA) of RuO-NS was estimated by underpotential deposition of Cu, where enhancement of RSA was observed with surfactant. The sensitivity in amperometric glucose detection was improved by about four times after electrochemical cleaning of RuO-NS. The RuO-NS electrode also displayed selectivity for glucose against some biological interferents (L-ascorbic acid, 4-acetamidophenol, uric acid and dopamine hydrochloride). Another merit of the RuO-NS electrode was potentiometric performance in pH sensing, which was comparable with glass pH electrode.
