Application of bimetallic catalyst Pd/Cu on nZVI support is a well-known technology in catalytic nitrate reduction. During synthesis of bimetallic catalyst, wide and even dispersion of nano-sized Pd and Cu particles must be achieved for effective removal of nitrate and selectivity of reaction product. In this study, the effect of dispersion of Pd on nitrate removal kinetic and selectivity toward final product was investigated. Fixing deposited Pd/Cu ratio at 0.3/0.5 wt % , level of dispersion was controlled by different concentration of Pd precursor. SEM/EDX images indicated that dispersion control through different concentration of Pd precursor was successfully achieved. Similar rate constants (0.1 ? 0.2 min-1) and removal efficiencies (80 ? 90%) were obtained by dense and wide dispersion of Pd, indicating that different dispersion of Pd cannot affect to both removal rate and efficiency. However, selectivity toward end product differently behaved according to level of dispersion. Using densely dispersed catalyst, ammonia and nitrite accounted for 54% and 36% of the reaction products, respectively, while using widely dispersed catalyst, ammonia and nitrite accounted for 70% and 8% of the reaction products, respectively. This study showed that dispersion of Pd particles on Cu/nZVI support can be a significant factor to control the selectivity in nitrate reduction.
