We report on synthesis of stable polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) in aqueous solution and employed as an ideal nanoreactor for synthesis of bimetallic Au-Ag core-shell as well as alloy nanoparticles (NPs). The nanometer-sized PECs (composed of PAH1/PAA0.4) were synthesized by simple mixing of two weak polyelectrolytes, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in nonstoichiometric ratio (PAH:PAA= 1:0.40) without using sacrificial templates. Subsequently, Au and Ag precursors loaded PECs used for synthesis of core-shell and alloy structures, followed by a successive reduction and a coreduction method, respectively. Interestingly, post reduction mixing of PAH-Au and PAA-Ag leaded to existences of individual Au and Ag NPs entities within the PECs rather than core-shell or alloy structure. The catalytic performances of these three types of bimetallic NPs have been tested for reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Au-Ag core-shell structures showed much higher catalytic performance than their alloy or individual structure owing to a strong bimetallic synergetic effect.
