LaNi5 is an alloy used for hydrogen storage and an electrode in a battery. Detailed characteristics of LaNi5 in relation to the capability of storing hydrogen in the bulk may be significantly influenced by the initial activation procedures which can change the chemical states of its surface as well as its bulk defects. In our laboratory, we built an experimental setup which can measure adsorption isotherms up to an equilibrium pressure of 1000 torr, while the base pressure is maintained below 1 × 10-6torr. Using the apparatus, we studied the hydrogen isotherm of LaNi5 which was prepared by various initial treatments such as grinding and annealing in vacuum or in a hydrogen atmosphere. We found that the saturation value of H/LaNi5 varies depending on various factors such as the size of the alloy and annealing temperatures. Based on our measurements, we suggest that properties of the surfaceof LaNi5 are important factors in shifting the isotherms.
