Electrochemical measurements have proved to be remarkably capable for the detection of dopamine (DA). However, electrochemical determination of DA is hampered by the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), which usually exists in large amounts in real systems and is oxidized at nearly the same potential as DA. To overcome these difficulties, we present a modified electrode based on Au25 nanoparticles protected with glutathione (GS-Au25NPs) that bear negative charge in neutral solution and exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activities. To prepare the modified electrode on a glassy carbon electrode, GS-Au25NPs were anchored with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxy silane sol-gel network. The cyclic voltammogram of the modified electrode exhibited well-defined and reversible redox peaks with a formal potential at 0.12 V vs Ag/AgCl corresponding to GS-Au25NPs0/1- couple. The modified electrode exhibited pH dependent sensing sensitivity, indicating that the sensitivity can be controlled by the charge on GS-Au25NPs. The peak currents were selectively increased upon the addition of DA, whereas the current increases were found to be very little with AA. This result shows that the selective sensing can be achieved by ligand engineering of the GS-Au25NPs.
