A compact, sensitive and continuous absorbance detection system using a microfluidic chip for determination of pollutants in wastewater has been developed. The system can be miniaturized by containing a LED (light emitting diode) and PMT (photomultiplier tube) as a light source and detector respectively. The LCW (liquid core waveguide) made of Teflon AF-2400 was used to extend a light path length of absorbance detection system. To block stray light, the microfluidic chip is fabricated using black PDMS. The interference filter was positioned in front of PMT to define the wavelength of maximum absorption. To demonstrate its applicability for environmental monitoring, nitrite in water is determined by color development using the sulfanilamide and N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride reagent. The linear range and limit of detection are 5?400 ppb (R2=0.9991) and 0.6 ppb (S/N=3) respectively.
