Core@shell colloidal nanoparticles with metal oxide core and silica shell have been of great interest because of their potential applications in medical and biological fields. Especially, core-shell structured nanoparticles contained the radio metal nuclide have a potential as a novel imaging agent for tomography such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). In this study, the radio nuclide Co-57 contained CoO(core)@SiO2 (shell) nanoshell was prepared by reverse microemulsion method. The core cobalt oxide nanorods were obtained by thermal decomposition of Co-57 contained Co-(oleate)2 precursor. The Co-57 contained Co-(oleate)2 precursor was synthesized by simple complex reaction of cobalt chloride hexahydrate containing 1mCi of [57Co]CoCl2 and sodium oleate molecules. The SiO2 coating on surface of core cobalt oxide nanorods was performed by hydrolysis and condensation reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the water phase of reverse microemulsion system. The physicochemical characterizations of the obtained CoO@SiO2 nanoshell material was performed by elemental anaysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The radioactivity of the Co-57 contained CoO@SiO2 nanoshell was measured by the radiation dosimetry.
