Proton-exchange membranes have been widely studied in the past few decades due to their important application in fuel cell systems. The mainly used proton-exchange membranes are hydrated perfluoroacidic polymers such as DuPont's Nafion? because of their excellent properties including high proton conductivity, mechanical strength and thermal & chemical stability. However these perfluorosulfonic acid membranes have critical drawbacks: high preparation cost, high methanol crossover, low performance at temperatures higher than 100℃ Alternatively, partially fluorinated polymers are expected to be the promising candidate because of their high thermal properties, low preparation cost and working at high temperatures. Here, we report the synthesis, characterization and electrochemical properties of four different partially fluorinated & sulfonated poly(bipheylene-co-sulfone)ether membranes containing perfluorocyclobutane groups for fuel cell applications: random, block, branched random and branched block-copolymers. The sulfonated membranes were analyzed in terms of electrochemical properties-ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, proton conductivity.
