Novel CdS quantum dot (QD)―silver orthophosphate nanocomposites are synthesized by electrostatically-derived assembly between positively charged CdS QDs and negatively charged silver orthophosphate. The formations of cationic CdS QDs with the average diameter of 2.5 nm and anionic silver orthophosphate with a body-centered cubic structure are confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, high resolution-transmission electron microscopy, and zeta potential measurements. The self-assembled CdS QD―silver orthophosphate nanocomposites show the Bragg reflections of CdS and silver orthophosphate phases. The homogeneous hybridization of CdS and silver orthophosphate is confirmed by field emission-scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry analysis. Diffuse reflectance UV―vis spectroscopy measurement clearly demonstrates the visible light harvesting ability of the obtained CdS―silver orthophosphate nanocomposites. In the light of this, the CdS―silver orthophosphate nanocomposites are tested as photocatalyst for visible light-induced generation of O2 and H2 gases as well as for photodegradation of organic molecules. The effect of hybridization on the photocatalytic activity and physicochemical properties of CdS and silver orthophosphate will be discussed in detail.
