Polymer solar cells become increasingly attractive since they have displayed various potential advantages over traditional silicon based solar cells. Recently, the conjugated polymers containing thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (T34BT) derivatives have received great attention since the devices employing those polymers have shown much improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) comparing with others. In these studies, we have synthesized thieno[3,4-b]thiophene and investigated their surface structures and thermal stability on Au (111) surface. STM studies showed that the saturation coverages of T34BT in UHV generated self assembled monolayers(SAMs) of T34BT on Au (111) surface. XPS and TPD studies indicated that T34BT are stable upto 500K and further heating of the sample resulted in thermal dissociations of the molecules. Based on the analysis of C 1s peak from XPS data, we have proposed a dissociation mechanism of T34BT. Finally, high resolution STM images of SAMs of T34BT via dipping the Au (111) sample in the solution will be demonstrated.
