The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that bio-inks, containing biologically active particles or cells, can be delivered on pre-determined patterns using a commercial inkjet printer. Since ink-jet printer is a powerful tool for precision patterning and manufacture, any cells can be seeded directly onto any target surfaces, providing the shape-size controlled structure, known as a custom designed tissue scaffold. Moreover we can control proliferation of cells within pre-patterned barriers. We modified a commercially available piezo-electric printer, allowing biological macromolecules, including cells and large vesicles fed from 8 different cartridges onto a hydrogel-coated surface. We will present our preliminary results, including density control of seeded cells, cell viability and bio-ink formulation, which have to be determined for further bio-technology unitization of ink-jet based tissue engineering. However, inkjet printing requires cell suspensions to be stable over several minutes during the printing process and some cell aggregation or sedimentation affected the print performance.
