Urea has two trans-NH protons capable of functioning as hydrogen bond donors and therefore has been utilized as a popular functional group for the construction of anion receptors. Herein, we prepared a series of oligo(diphenylurea)s that contain one to five of the repeating diphenylurea unit. The repeating unit is connected through ethynyl group at the ortho position of the urea group so that all of the existing NHs in the oligomers can participate in hydrogen bonding with an anion. Upon anion binding, the oligomers fold into helical conformation and the complexes can regard as anionic helicates analogous to the well known helicates mediated by the coordination of transition metals. The anion binding abilities of oligomers has been analyzed by UV/visible and 1H NMR titration experiments to reveal the relationship between the binding affinity and the number of the repeating units, that is, the number of the urea NH protons. Each anion displays a different relationship, depending on the size, shape and geometry. Details including the structures of complexes will be presented in the poster.
