Whereas chemical reaction in gas phase is well characterized, that in the condensed phase is little understood. Even a simple bimolecular reaction in condensed phase is not fully understood yet. Time-resolved IR spectroscopy can be utilized to probe reaction rate, its pathway, and its energetics following reaction as well as identify various reaction branches such as abstraction, substitution, and recombination reaction. Photodissociation of ICN produces CN radical that can abstract or substitute H or Cl from CHCl3, producing HCN, ClCN, CHCl2CN, and CCl3CN. HCN and ClCN is probed at 3265 cm-1 (H-CN), 2093 cm-1 (HC-N), and 2205 cm-1 (ClC-N). Vibrationally excited state was observed at 3160 cm-1 (H-CN, v=1→2) and 2067 cm-1 (HC-N, v=1→2). CHCl2CN and CCl3CN is located at 2258 cm-1 (CHCl2CN) and 2250 cm-1 (CCl3CN). Reaction mechanism of CN + CHCl3 in the condensed phase will be discussed from these detailed reaction branches and their energetic.
