We investigated the adsorption behavior of various anionic molecules such as methyl orange (MO), fluorescein (FL), and DNA strands on the positively charged layered double hydroxide (LDH) and negatively charged montmorillonite K-10 (MMT). As adsorbents, the size controlled LDH (Mg0.78Al0.22(OH)2(CO3)0.11?mH2O) was prepared by conventional coprecipitation method, followed by the hydrothermal treatment and MMT ((Na,Ca)0.33(Al,Mg)2(Si4O10)(OH)2?nH2O) was purchased from Kunimine Co. Ltd. Both nanoparticles have plate-like shape with diameter less than hundred nanometers. The specific surface area of LDH and MMT were determined to be 51.76 g/m2, 243.65 g/m2 from the N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, and the surface charge were estimated as + 30 and - 40 mV, respectively. According to the adsorption isotherms (anion concentration: 1.93×10-6 ~ 1.60×10-4 M), it was revealed that the adsorbed amount of anions is proportional to the concentration and lager for LDH than MMT. The interaction between DNA strands and each LDH and MMT in aqueous suspension was well described with Freundlich (R2 > 0.99) and linear adsorption model, respectively. The fitting result revealed that the DNA adsorption on LDH is more facilitated compared to other anionic species which might be resulted from the matching of equivalent area per unit charge (?2/e-) and charge periodicity.
