Polyacetylene is the structurally simplest conducting polymer; nevertheless, it is not simple but difficult to characterize because of its insolubility. Making polyacetylene block copolymer by introducing a second monomer with good solubility is one of the synthetic method to overcome the inherent insolubility. Using ring opening metathesis polymerzation (ROMP) of cyclooctatetraene (COT) with Grubbs 3rd generation catalyst, we can easily make polynorbornene-block-polyacetylene. Various parameters - the solvent, the temperature, the time, the concentration, etc. - were changed in order for the synthetic efficiency. Furthermore, in-depth characterization of this polymer was carried out from UV/IR/Raman spectroscopy, MALLS, DLS, DSC, AFM, etc. Especially, the temperature dependence of the polymerization is interesting. The conversion of COT is higher as the temperature increases; however, benzene extrusion, which is the side reaction of ROMP of COT, is also prominent as the temperature goes up. At the high temperature, thermodynamically-favored trans-polyacetylene block copolymer, of which band gap is approximately 1.5 eV, is obtained dominantly. On the contrary, cis-polyacetylene block copolymer is the major product at the low temperature.
