We report the synthesis of N-doped carbon thin films with a mesoporous structure arising from the electrodeposition of polypyrrole into the pores of the mesoporous silica thin films(MSTFs). The MSTF has wormlike and cubic structures. The thickness ranges from 150 to 200 nm and both have pore sizes of 9 nm and wall thicknesses of 4 nm. Polypyrrole was electrochemically synthesized in the pores of MSTF followed by calcination in an inert atmosphere and removal of MSTF to form N-doped carbon replicas. Factors such as the pore structure of MSTFs, solvents in electrochemical deposition and calcination conditions are presented in this work. X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were used for structural analysis. Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS) , confocal raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) were used for elemental analysis. The carbon films were successfully replicated, therefore showed heights of ~150 nm and pores size of ~7 nm due to minor contractions during calcinations. Existence of nitrogen doped in the films was confirmed, which is expected to enhance the electrochemical properties of the film.
