Solar energy is one of the prominent sources of energy available to mankind. This enormous amount of energy can be converted into electrical energy with the help of photovoltaic devices. These devices can be constructed with the help of semiconductors having optimum band gap, so as to absorb maximum portion of solar photon flux. Most of the semiconductors have a specific band gap depending on the position of valance and conduction band edges and can absorb solar photons of only equal and higher energy than their band gaps. In order to absorb the whole part of solar photon flux we need the model having graded band gaps. Which not only facilitate the absorption of light but also helps efficient charge transport. Herein we present the formation of CdO-CdSe core shell nanoporus architectures through simple ion exchange process and tuning their band gaps by controlling ion exchange time. Further we characterized their photoelctrochemical performance. The application of this interesting phenomenon of forming graded band gaps by simple ion exchange process in photovoltaic devices can boost the their efficiency.
