Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), an inorganic framework, are biocompatible materials which can be used as a drug-delivery system. Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for the treatment of inflammation and pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, we have successfully synthesized the Ketoprofen-LDH Nanohybrids via co-precipitation method. Ketoprofen is electrostatically bound to the interlayer surface of cationic LDH lattice. According to the X-ray diffraction patterns and FT-IR spectroscopic analyses, the basal spacing of the ketoprofen-LDH nanohybrids are estimated to be 23.1?, indicating that the ketoprofen molecules are well intercalated into the interlayer space of Zn-Al LDH. From the ICP-AES, TG-DTA and HPLC analyses, the chemical compositon of the present hybrid drug was determined as Zn2Al1(OH)6[(Ketoprofen)0.5(NO3)0.5]x(H2O). The hexagonal platelet morphology of the sample was also clearly observed by SEM. In vitro drug release test was also carried out to investigated the controlled release behavior of ketoprofen molecules out of the LDH lattice. Finally, we found that the present ketoprofen-LDH nanohybrid, as an inorganic drug delivery system, can be useful for transdermal application as confirmed by in-vitro experiment.
