Complex biological processes in both healthy and diseased cells are characterized by the up- or down-regulation of large numbers of cellular markers. Since modern microscopy techniques such as epifluorescence, confocal, and 2-photon have emerged as extremely powerful tools to track and quantify these markers, the design of highly sensitive and selective fluorescence-based sensory materials with easily detectable recognition events have been of great interest in chemical, biological, and pharmaceutical sciences. Our research group has been interested in the development of "smart" molecular probes that specifically recognize and interact with target biological molecules, resulting in a large signal transduction event. In this talk, we will present the design of fluorescent turn-on probes for the detection of biological interesting analytes and also demonstrate their real-time imaging in living systems.
