Scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy are very powerful tools for examining the molecular-resolution images, physical properties, and behaviors of the anchoring phases of organic molecules on a surface as well as for molecular manipulations on a surface. The molecular self-assembled phenomena of organic thiols provides an easy and useful means for the fabrication of highly ordered molecular films and the construction of functional nanostructures with a molecular precision at a localized region. In this talk, we will discuss about the self-assembly phenomena and two-dimensional (2D) structures of organosulfur molecules on gold from a nanoscopic viewpoint and how to control 2D molecular arrangements of organic self-assembled monolayers. In addition, the fabrication and patterning of hybrid films composed of polyelectrolyte and imogolite nanotube will also be discussed.
