By using an atomistic grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation technique, we simulate the confined water between an atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip and a surface. To find the effect of tip-surface distance, we calculate the force experienced by the AFM tip and the width and fluctuation of the water meniscus. We also investigate the effect of surface structure on adsorption and condensation by comparing the result for gold (111) surface and muscovite mica with gold AFM tip. As the tip approaches the surface, the confined water molecules change their configurations and orientations. Due to these changes, the force profile shows an oscillating behavior both gold and mica surface. When the tip-surface distance is fixed, the tip feels the monotonically increasing attractive force with the relative humidity. The pull-off force shows different value according to the relative humidity. In the gold (111) surface, it tends to increase and then decrease as humidity increases. Whereas, in the mica surface, multiple peaks are shown in the pull-off force curve.
