Coal-tar pitch is a complex mixture of many thousand constituents, primarily polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. There are several approaches to use coal tar pitches using solvent extraction as an anode materials of lithium ion secondary battery (LIBs). However, coal tar pitches derived carbons (denoted as CTPC) still has lower capacity and anode performance compared with commercial carbonaceous materials. Also, there are little reports to understand the relationship between CTPC’s properties and electrochemical performance. Therefore, it is essential to reveal the key factor of structural and properties of CTPC in order to provide the improved anode performance. In this study, the CTPC were obtained by Soxhlet extraction, which especially considered solubility parameters using three different solvents. Combining ultra-sonication method reduced time consuming of the extraction procedure, followed by heat-treatment at temperature range 800-2400°C in N2 atmosphere. The carbons were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Element analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Also, we tried to find the relationship between microstructure, particle morphology, chemical composition of the CTPC and the electrochemical performance as electrode materials for LIBs.
