Li1.6Mn1.6O4 is the most attractive Li+ adsorbent. Li1.6Mn1.6O4 has a spinel structure with Li+ at the 8a tetrahedral sites and Mn(Ⅳ) at the 16d octahedral sites in a cubic closed-packed lattice of oxide ions. Li+ ions can also easily migrate in the oxide lattice resulting in higher ion-exchange capacity and chemical stability. However, the synthesis of Li1.6Mn1.6O4 cannot be done easily due to other competing phases existed using conventional high temperature reactions. In this study, we are quite successful in preparing homogeneous and high crystalline Li1.6Mn1.6O4 using lithium-containing flux at relatively low temperature. Molten salts methods can grow larger crystals with high crystallinity at relatively low temperature. In addition, advantages such as homogeneity, distinct morphology, and a narrow particle size distribution of powder can be easily achieved. Li1.6Mn1.6O4 with octahedral shape is prepared using MnCl2 as a manganese source and LiOH-LiCl flux at 400℃. Li1.6Mn1.6O4 is characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).
