Li1.6Mn1.6O4 has been known to be the most suitable for recovery of lithium from seawater owing to its promising properties such as high selectivity for lithium ions, large adsorptive capacity, and high chemical stability. However the preparation of Li1.6Mn1.6O4are not simple and quite difficult. In this work we prepared Li1.6Mn1.6O4 by the sol-gel method. Unlike other synthesis methods, sol-gel method can provide a better control in the ratio of lithium to manganese, which is the most critical point in the process of Li1.6Mn1.6O4synthesis. And then in order to synthesize lithium adsorbent (H1.6Mn1.6O4), Li+ extraction from as-prepared Li1.6Mn1.6O4 was performed using 0.5M HCl solutions. The Li+ uptake experiments are performed to find a close relationship between Li+ adsorption capacity and reaction conditions of Li1.6Mn1.6O4such as various calcination temperatures and reaction times. The physicochemical properties of the product were characterized by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA)/differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).
