Li1.6Mn1.6O4 phase is the most promising lithium adsorbent due to its high lithium-uptake capacity and chemical stability. In order to synthesize needle-like Li1.6Mn1.6O4 phase, we have prepared needle-like β-MnO2 by hydrothermal method. The morphology control of the precursor compounds such as β-MnO2 can provide a route to control the morphology of the final products such as Li1.6Mn1.6O4. In this work, the Li1.6Mn1.6O4 has been synthesized from needle-like β-MnO2 through flux method using relatively low reaction temperature, which prevents β-MnO2 from the phase transition occurred at more than 500oC owing to the loss of oxygen. For the purpose of evaluating the as-prepared Li1.6Mn1.6O4 as lithium adsorbent, manganese oxide adsorbent (H1.6Mn1.6O4) was made by acid treatment, and then the Li+ uptake was carried out in lithium-enriched solution. SEM observation showed that the needle-like morphology of β-MnO2 was maintained through the whole processes. The physicochemical properties of the needle-like Li1.6Mn1.6O4 and H1.6Mn1.6O4 were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively couple plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)/differential thermal analysis (DTA).
