Heterogeneous catalysis has advantages over the homogeneous counterpart in that it allows ready separation of catalyst from the product and it often obviates the need for supporting ligands. In this regard, we introduced palladium nanoparticle immobilized on silica nanotube (Pd-SNT) that shows much enhanced catalytic activity compared to homogeneous Pd-catalysts. We prepared a novel Pd-SNT nanocomposite by forming Pd-nanoparticle onto the inner surface of silica nanotube (SNT) for catalytic reaction through a thermal reduction with N-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) dimethylenetriamine (DETA). On the other hand, the unmodified outer surface of SNT helps maintain the homogeneity in aqueous medium. We successfully applied this catalytic system in Suzuki coupling as well as direct arylation of thiazoles in water.Low catalyst loading (0.5 mol % Pd) and mild reaction conditions (60-80 oC) indicated the high catalytic activity of the current system. We confirmed that there is no catalyst leaching during the reaction, confirming that the reaction proceeds inside of SNT. Furthermore, after the reaction, Pd-SNT could be precipitated and a simple decantation allows separation of the catalyst.
