Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) have been extensively employed for industrial, environmental, and clinical analyses. Although poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) has been a common polymeric matrix to prepare ion-selective membranes, its utility for all-solid-state-type sensors has been limited due to poor adhesion to the electrode surface, eventually detracting the sensor’s lifetime. To overcome such a problem, the use of silicone rubber (SR) has attracted attention as an alternative owing to its strong adhesion to various metallic electrode surfaces. Unfortunately, its applications has been, however, restricted because of severe noise levels in the sensor signal, which are mainly caused by SR’s high membrane resistance. Herein we employ a solvent-soluble conducting polymer to reduce the membrane resistance. Furthermore, incorporation of a conducting polymer into the ion-selective SR membrane may allow to improve ion-to-electron transduction between two different phases, i.e., the polymeric sensing membrane and the metallic electrode. A series of solvent-soluble benzobisthiazole- and ethylenedioxythiophene-type conducting polymers are used to prepare all-solid-state potassium-, sodium-, and proton-selective SR membranes. The electrochemical properties of ISEs are evaluated in terms of sensor’s drift, noise levels, and impedance. In addition, the effect of surfactants on long-term sensor performance is investigated.
