Nonenzymatic glucose sensors, the most advanced generation of electrochemical glucose sensors, have been studied to avoid the instability of enzyme. Pt nanomaterials have been widely used as an electrode for the direct electrooxidation of glucose. Recently, there are increasing efforts to use Au nanostructure as a nonenzymatic electrode since Au is more electroactive towards glucose oxidation and less subject to unnecessary chemisorption. In this sense, we synthesized a single-crystalline Au nanowire by chemical vapor transport method without using any catalysts or capping agents, fabricated an individual Au nanowire electrode (Au NWE) and investigated the direct electrooxidation of glucose at the surface of Au NWE using cyclic voltammetry measurement. Au NWEs showed a directly proportional current signal to the glucose concentration over the range of human blood glucose. The effect of chloride ion to the oxidation current and the cyclic voltammogram of interfering species were also examined.
