Biodiesel has received a great attention due to its potential to renewable energy. Among various feedstocks for biodiesel production, vegetable oils, especially the used canola oil was investigated. In this study, the pure canola oil as a control, was converted to biodiesel by transesterification using homogeneous based catalyst. The pure canola oil had the acid number about 0.03261 (±0.0058). The basic catalyst that was used in this research was potassium hydroxide (KOH) 2.0 wt% and reaction temperature was 55±5 oC and methnol : canola oil was 9:1. Brown grease obtained from the grease trap was converted to biodiesel using heterogeneous catalyst using H2SO4, SiO2, zeolite, and NiSO4/SiO2 oxide. To optimize the esterification conditions, methanol/brown grease weight range from 0.18 to 0.42, catalyst/brown grease weight ratio range from 0.75% to 1.75%, and reaction time from 30 min to 3 hr at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The chemical compositions of FFAs in brown grease were characterized as n-hexadecanoic acid (C16H32O2), 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (C18H32O2) and octadecanoic acid (C18H36O2) and biodiesel obtained from these FFAs were hexadecanoic methyl ester (C17H34O2), 9,12-octadecadienoic methyl ester (C19H34O2), 9-octadecenoic methyl ester (C19H36O2) and octadecanoic methyl ester (C19H38O2). Among the catalysts that were tested, the order of the catalytic activity was H2SO4>NiSO4/SiO2>zeolite>SiO2.
