Polypyrrolidone(Nylon-4) is similar to natural cotton in terms of the hygroscopic properties, dyeability, anti-electrostatic property, and similar to Nylon-6 in terms of tensile strength and modulus. But the most crucial problem of Nylon-4 compound is lack of thermal stability. With its low thermal decomposition temperature(Td) which is lower than melting point(mp), Nylon4 shows poor spinning processability. Because of such characteristic, copolymerization is vital to prevent unzipping in melt spinning. Using metal catalyst and acylchloride as cocatalyst, anionic ring-opening copolymerization of 2-pyrrolidone with β-lactam were carried out at 50~100℃. The comonomer cyclic octyl β-lactam was prepared via N-chlorosulfonylisocyanate cyaloaddition reactions with cyclooctene. And, the relationship between reaction temperature and monomer composition in copolymer was investigated. According to the copolymer composition, changes in melting temperature and thermal decomposition temperaure were found. Its molecular weight was obtained using intrinsic viscosity. Also, the obtained copolymer was analysed by FT-NMR, TGA and DSC.
