Back ground/Aims : Polyborminated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are chemicals known as brominated flame retardants. We assessed the exposure status of the general population to PBDEs and explored associations with demographic information, including participants' age, sex, as well as life style factors and food consumptions. A total of 400 serum samples from participants resided in Ansan and Ulsan city were analyzed for PBDEs. Es. The population consisted of 50% male subjects. The participants aged from 20 years to 69 years with mean age of 50.3 years. We measured 27 PBDE congeners and concentrations of target analytes were expressed as nanograms per gram lipid. Method : The analytical methods and quality control procedures laid out by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were followed with some modification. The serum lipid concentrations were determined enzymatically. Serum samples were spiked with isotopically labelled standards and extracted using HLB cartridge. The extracts were cleaned with sulfuric acid silica cartridge. We performed the isotope dilution gas chromatography/ high-resolution mass spectrometry (ID GC-HRMS) with the resolution higher than 10,000. Results : The mean (median) concentrations of Σ7PBDEs and Σ27PBDEs of populations were 6.67 (5.23) ng/g lipid and 8.63 (6.35) ng/g lipid, respectively. The congener with the highest serum concentration was BDE-153 (median 2.14) followed by BDE-47 (median 1.79) and BDE-99 (median 0.65). Compared to other countries, the median total PBDE concentrations were similar to those found in Japan, China, and EU, but much lower than that found in U.S. The congeners, BDE-3, -7, -17, -49, -71, -66, -77, -85, -126, -138, -156, and BDE-184, were not detected in any serum samples. We observed some significant differences by regions, sex. We found a positive increase of BDE-153 with age (r=0.301, p<0.01). We observed some correlations with life style factors and dietary factors. Conclusion : We believe that this study can provide the reliable results for PBDEs in Korean general populations can be a considerable contribution to the human exposure assessment to PBDEs.
