Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered prominent field emitters due to their high emission properties, good emission stabilities, and long emitter lifetimes. Therefore CNTs are useful in the fabrication of cathode-ray tubes and flat-panel displays. Most of these applications require highly dense and ordered nanotube arrays in order to exhibit high emission characteristics. In this experiment, we synthesize single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on textured Si substrate using thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). By synthesizing SWNTs on ZnO nanorods, the suspended SWNTs formed on ZnO nanorods can create three-dim networks. The field emission (FE) current densities of the sample above are measured and compared with those of SWNTs synthesized on textured Si substrate using thermal CVD. The FE current density from the SWNTs on ZnO nanorods is higher than value that from SWNTs synthesized on textured Si substrate and the turn-on field, defined as that required for obtaining a current density of 10 μA /cm2, is lower from 3.64 V/μm to 2.33V/μm. From this result, we conclude that these individually separated SWNTs through synthesizing on ZnO nanorods are very efficient for FE.
