We applied molecularly imprinted polymer thin films to the sensing of gaseous formaldehyde and BTEXS(Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene, Styrene) and characterized the performance of gas sensing using surface plasmon resonance technique. The molecularly imprinted polymer films were synthesized by photo-polymerization method using several different templates, functional monomers and cross-linkers. To sense the formaldehyde molecules more effectively, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine(2,4-DNPH) was imbedded in the polymer film as the capturing material of formaldehyde. As a result, a remarkable increase of sensitivity for formaldehyde relative to BTEX was observed. The morphology and porosity of the polymer films were controlled using different mixing ratios of the pre-polymerization solution and confirmed by atomic force microscopy. The effects of templates and cross-linkers were also discussed.
