New complexes [LnCoCl2] (Ln = L1 ─ L5) were synthesized by the reaction between [CoCl2.6H2O] and the corresponding ligands, N-((1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-N-(cyclohexylmethyl)(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methanamine (L1), N,N-bis((1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-2,6-diethylbenzenamine (L2), N,N-bis((1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)cyclohexanamine (L3), N-((1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-N-((furan-2-yl)methyl)(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methanamine (L4) and N,N-bis((1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-3-methoxypropan-1-amine (L5), respectively. The molecular structure of [LnCoCl2] (Ln= L1 and L2) is best described as a distorted tetrahedral geometry involving non-coordination of the nitrogen atom of the N-cyclohexylmethylamine moiety and the Co(II) metal center, resulting in the formation of an eight-membered chelate ring. However, [LnCoCl2] (Ln = L3 ─ L5) showed distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around metal center, resulting from a coordination of the nitrogen atom of the N-cycloalkyamine moiety and the Co(II) metal center. Among Co(II) complexes, [L3CoCl2] showed the highest catalytic activity for the polymerisation of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) with an activity of 8.33 × 104 g PMMA/mol Co?h at 60°C and PMMA syndiotacticity (characterised using 1H NMR spectroscopy) of ca. 0.70.
