Abstract Upconversion (UC) luminescence via energy transfer (ET) process between pairs of Yb3+ and Er3+ ions was investigated in Yb3+, Er3+-doped Y2SiO5 nanoparticles prepared by hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of the nanoparticles were investigated by scanning electronic microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The different morphologies include rectangle cubic, boomerang-like form can be obtained by calcining temperature The up-conversion spectra were recorded using a near-infrared diode laser (λ=980 nm). Upon excitation with the NIR diode laser, UC luminescence with an intense emission band centered at ~660 nm, along with less intense emission bands at ~540 nm, was detected. The concentration of Yb3+ and Er3+ has a stronger influence on the relative intensities of the green (G) and red (R) UC bands. The upconversion process of Yb3+,Er3+-doped Y2SiO5 is a two photon process. The ET mechanism was discussed.
