Autler-Townes splitting has been known to be negligible in the electronic spectroscopy of the polyatomic molecules, so far. However, we have observed the clear evidence for the Autler-Townes splitting in the 0-0 transition between the S1 state and the ground state for ortho-substituted thiophenol derivatives for the first time. The clear doublet features appear in the resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization (R2PI) spectra and strongly dependent on both the laser field strength and the decay rate of the excited state. Semi-classical density matrix equations and following dressed atom approach in the three-level model system well reproduce our observations, with conclusion that the molecules having their lifetime within few hundreds of picoseconds may exhibit the Autler-Townes splitting in the electronic transitions.
