Anthraquinone appended new calix[4]arene (1) has been synthesized in the cone conformation. With respect to UV-vis absorption changes upon metal ion complexation, 1 shows the Cu(II) ion selectivity over other metal cations. When Cu(II) ion was added to 1, the absorbance band was remarkably red shifted about 67 nm and the color of the solution changed from yellow to red which could easily be detected by the naked eye. In the presence of two proximal hydroxyl groups and crown group in anthraquinone-calix[4]arene were observed to play an important role to exhibit its selective Cu(II) ion binding.
