A new highly sensitive and selective near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe bearing Nile Red and benzoyl thiourea group, based on Hg(II)-induced desulfurization reaction, was designed and synthesized. And its chemodosimetric behaviors toward metal cations were investigated by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. Amongst various metal cations tested in buffered aqueous solution (HEPES buffer, 10 mM, pH 7.4), only Hg(II) ion responses to irreversible color changes (blue → pink), along with distinctive blue shifts in UV/Vis and fluorescence spectra. Moreover, the NIR fluorescent probe can be applicable to macrophage cells for the monitoring of Hg(II).
