The characterization of branched polymers is not easy with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) based analysis since the correlation between the chain size and the molecular weight (or the chain structure) is far more complicated than linear polymers. On the other hand, interaction chromatography (IC) is able to separate branched polymers with a good sensitivity to molecular weight (not chain size). Therefore, IC has shown far better resolution than SEC and demonstrated its utility in the analysis of certain type of branched polymers. If the IC separation is combined with SEC and multiple detections, one may be able to get far more detailed information on the branched polymers. In this paper, our recent efforts on the HPLC characterization of branched polymers will be presented.
