Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a devastating disease which causes memory loss and several cognitive impairments. Currently known biomarkers for this disease are A-beta antibody and TTR. We have been working on developing a gold nanoparticle-based immunosorbent assay that would detect the amount of the biomarkers in serum to diagnose AD. In order to obtain better sensitivity than that the conventional ELISA method has, gold nanoparticles that have distinct spectrophotometric characteristics have been used. Not only their surface plasmon resonance character but the fact that they can be easily conjugated to biological molecules such as proteins or antibodies has been useful. To amplify signal and implement an assay in a high-throughput format, a series of silver staining on gold nanoparticles was done within 96 wells.
